Reflections on the
Brownsville "revival" in Pensacola..
In the summer of 1996,
Charisma magazine published an extensive
article on the "revival" taking place at the Brownsville Assembly
of God in
Pensacola, Florida. Great care was given
to describe this "revival"
as being quite different from the Toronto Blessing. Throughout the
article, it was claimed that this was in fact an authentic revival with
repentance and salvations occurring nightly.. in the tradition of the
great revivals of the past. I felt an urge by the Holy Spirit to make a
detour on my family vacation and visit the Brownsville Assembly of God.
So with great anticipation and expectation I arrived in Pensacola late on
a Friday evening in August. The next day we drove out to the barrier
islands that lie off the coast of Pensacola and witnessed the devastation
of two recent hurricanes that had come inland at Pensacola (a rare phenomenon
for two hurricanes to enter at the same point in such a short span of
time).
I felt the timing of these powerful storms and the "revival" taking
place were not coincidental and that the Lord was speaking to me through
things I was witnessing in the natural but I had no idea yet as to the
interpretation of these events. etc... etc.. I was still unsuspecting as to what
waited for me at the Brownsville Assembly of God. I got to the meeting
early, excited at the prospect of perhaps seeing a true revival,
something I know every believer of Jesus Christ longs to see in the
church. It is so desperately needed. As I talked with those waiting,
everyone encouraged us that our long trip would not be in vain, that we
would be greatly blessed. I purchased some booklets in the lobby excited
to learn more about what God was doing.
Finally, the meeting began with
worship. My excitement and enthusiasm quickly vanished. Something
seemed very wrong to me. I thought maybe I was expecting too much. The
worship was very typical of the modern contemporary worship that I had
been accustomed to, most of the songs familiar, but something didn't seem
right in the Spirit.. Then the manifestations
began. Young girls walking around
gesturing as though they were mentally ill. One of the worship leaders,
a female, collapsed on the floor during the worship where she
remained for a long time. I kept telling myself.. keep an open mind.
I kept asking God.. is this you.. if this is you, give me a peace in my
spirit. It never came. As the speakers
began to share, I became increasing disturbed. They spoke
of the mystical appearance of
the river on that fateful Sunday in June of 1995 and how
its power swept into the building and changed everything. They
went on and on about
manifestations, particularly about bizarre behaviors in which they
believed they were birthing things through intercession. The pastor's
wife spoke and the entire time she was on the platform she jerked
uncontrollably as she told stories of phenomenon. Finally, I could stand
it no longer. I looked at my family and said let's get out of here. They
were quick to agree. I left the materials that I had purchased on the
church parking lot. I didn't even want to take them in my car. At
first, I was devastated. I was so disappointed.. so confused. Why would
God send me to witness such a spectacle. I thought surely I missed God,
either in the decision to come.. or the decision to get up and leave. As
I wept before the Lord, sought His face over the next few days, I
realized why he had sent me. The hurricanes were a warning. Mighty storms
are devastating the church.. the storm generating from Pensacola, Florida
will be twice as devastating and will come in two phases.. like the two
hurricanes. Pensacola has already been the sight of great religious
deception with the murder of an abortion doctor. What is being heralded
as good is bringing untold destruction. I also realized that we
are about to enter a period
of "civil war" in the church, a battle between the true church of
true faith which will be like Fort Pickens and the deceived church in
rebellion and a counterfeit spirit
like the three forts which were taken over by enemy forces. Those who
know the truth, who are loyal to the kingdom, will be under great assault
but as we look to God, look to the sea of His faithfulness, we too will
be supplied and we will be able to stand and be victorious in the end.
The deceptive power of the enemy is
awesome and adaptive. The folks promoting Pensacola are cleverly
answering the objections that have been made to the Toronto Blessing.
They are now packaging this revival as authentic, patterned after the
revivals of John Wesley's day. This is deception and I
believe with all my heart that the
spirit operating at Pensacola is a religious spirit, a counterfeit spirit...
They talked about the river, they talked about manifestations of power...
the Spirit of God inside me did not bear witness that this "revival"
was of Him. etc.. As I have thought
about this emphasis on the river, I was reminded by
the Lord that another culture worshipped a river.. it was the Egyptians.
I admit this river theology that is developing frightens me. It makes the
river the source, it makes the river the focus of faith. Let me give you
an example from Naman the
Syrian general. Advised by the prophet to dip in the river seven times to
be cured of leprosy, he obeyed and was healed but he
went back to the prophet to give
glory to God. He knew the source of the healing wasn't the river.
The error I see in this emphasis on manifestations is this: Our journey
is no longer toward the prize of the high calling, we must simply get to
the river. Christianity
is no longer taking up
the cross and following Jesus, it is a resort experience by the "river."

Syria's government was accused on Wednesday of carrying out a new massacre in a small village near the central city of Hama, with an opposition group claiming 100 people, including many women and children, had been killed. "We have 100 deaths in the village of al-Qubair, among them 20 women and 20 children," said Mohammed Sermini, spokesman for the Syrian National Council, who accused the regime of being behind the incident. etc.. The news came as international efforts to deal with the Syrian crisis appeared to have stalled after Russia and China again made clear their opposition to any kind of outside intervention after 15 months of bloodshed, an estimated 15,000 dead and a de facto civil war. 9 killed in attacks after deadly Iraq day

BAGHDAD (AP) — Bomb attacks in Iraq killed nine people Tuesday, officials said, a bloody aftershock to the country's deadliest day in two years that followed the declaration of a new al-Qaida offensive.
Police said an explosives-rigged motorcycle killed six Kurdish intelligence officials on a late afternoon security patrol in the northeast town of Tuz Khormato, located 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad. etc.. Less than an hour earlier and a little farther south, a parked minibus blew up near a police checkpoint in the city of Baquoba. The blast killed three passers-by and wounded 29 others, said local council spokeswoman Samira al-Shibli. The blasts followed a wave of violence across Iraq on Monday during which 115 people were killed. Many of those attacks also targeted security forces. The stretch of unusually hot days in March that had people running barefoot through sprinklers has proven deadly for several Central New York fruit crops. The apples, peaches, cherries, nectarines and wine grapes sprouted early buds that were then ruined by frost. Farmers report losses larger than any in recent years, possibly rivaling the legendary killer frosts of 1945. Some apple growers have lost more than 80 percent of their crops. World Bank says rising food prices a concern, ready to help

Wheat prices have jumped more than 50 percent and corn prices more than 45 percent since mid-June, with dry conditions in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, excessively wet weather in Europe and a below average start to the Indian monsoon season adding to global crop worries. Chagas Disease Considered To Be The New AIDS of the Americas

With 20 million people already affected by this tropical parasitic disease, the Chagas disease is likely to turn into a pandemic that will not be contained by the borders of Mexico, the United States or South America. In fact, the Chagas disease is considered to be the new AIDS of the Americas. A report published in late May in journal PLoS made it clear that the Chagas disease is quite a big risk. Experts in tropical diseases discussed the disease and found several aspects that make Chagas very alike with HIV. Although it is mostly considered a risk for countries with numerous poor populations, the United States has its own share of Chagas cases. Texas seems to be most vulnerable as most of the 30,000 U.S. citizens suffering with Chagas live in southern Texas. etc.. and the news story continues...

A Maryland high school punished a student for refusing to profess faith in Islam, gave her failing grades for a series of assignments that violated her Christian beliefs then threatened her father with arrest for complaining, a federal lawsuit charges. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court against the Charles County Public Schools in La Plata, Maryland, its board of education, Principal Evelyn Arnold and Vice Principal Shannon Morris by the Thomas More Law Center. A spokeswoman for the district told WND that officials were aware of the issue but said Arnold and Morris would not be commenting. Plaintiffs are Marine Corps veteran John Kevin Wood and his wife, Melissa, who “refuse[d] to allow their teenage daughter to be subjected to Islamic indoctrination and propaganda in her high school world history class.” The lawsuit charges that the defendants’ “curriculum, practices, policies, actions, procedures, and customs promote the Islamic faith by requiring students to profess the five pillars if Islam.” The students, the complaint says, were required to “write out and confess the shahada, the Islamic profession of faith.” The lawsuit charges that school officials concealed the curriculum by using two separate history textbooks, one of which contained the Islamic teachings and which students were required to leave at school. The other, which did not contain the teachings, was allowed to be taken home, the complaint explains. The school also excised the Islamic teachings from the course syllabus. “Defendants have treated plaintiffs’ Christian beliefs and heritage with deliberate indifference, and have been hostile toward C.W. [the student] and her family,” the complaint alleges. It explains that Arnold and Morris violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments as well as state and federal law by “depriving plaintiffs and C.W. of their fundamental right to be free from a public school’s promotion of certain religious beliefs, their fundamental right to be able to speak freely and raise concerns about religion being taught in our public schools without retaliation, and their fundamental right to be free from unjust discrimination against their Christian heritage.” The legal team notes the shahada states, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” “For non-Muslims, reciting the statement is sufficient to convert one to Islam,” the complaint says. “Moreover, the second part of the statement, ‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah,’ signifies the person has accepted Muhammad as their spiritual leader. The teenager was also required to memorize and recite the Five Pillars of Islam.” Not only did the district refuse permission for C.W. to opt out of the religious assignments, it imposed grades of zero. Further, the complaint says, the district disparaged Christianity in multiple ways, including the statement, “Most Muslims’ faith is stronger than the average Christian.” The district taught that the West engages in “imperialistic pursuits” and insists “men are the managers of women.” It also taught: “To Muslims, Allah is the same god that is worshipped in Christianity and Judaism.” The district’s teachings specified that the Quran “is the word of Allah,” while Jews and Christians “believe the Torah and the Gospels were revealed to Moses and the New Testament writers.” “The sugarcoated version of Islam taught at La Plata High School did not mention that the Quran explicitly instructs Muslims ‘to kill the unbelievers wherever you find them.’ (Sura 9-5),” the complaint says. John Kevin Wood discovered the teachings and called to voice his objections, the lawsuit says, but the school imposed a “no trespass” order against him, threatening him with arrest if he came onto school property. The school refused to give him any opportunity “to refute the untrue allegations” made by Arnold. “The Woods, as Christians, believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and our Savior, that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, and that following the teachings of Jesus Christ is the only path to eternal salvation. The Woods believe that it is a sin to profess commitment in word or writing to any god other than the Christian God. Thus, they object to their daughter being forced to deny the Christian God and to her high school promoting Islam over other religions,” the lawsuit explains. “The school ultimately refused to allow the Woods’ daughter to opt-out of the assignments, forcing her to either violate her faith by pledging to Allah or receive zeros for the assignments. Together, John Kevin Wood, Melissa Wood, and their daughter chose to remain faithful to God and refused to complete the assignments, even though failing grades would harm her future admission to college and her opportunities to obtain college scholarships.” Wood was deployed in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm “and lost friends to Islamic extremists,” the complaint notes. Defendants did not allow C.W. to opt out of these assignments or receive alternative assignments. Defendants refused to accommodate C.W.’s Christian beliefs. Instead, defendants coerced and punished C.W. for refusing to violate her Christian beliefs,” the claim explains.

Franklin Graham, son of international evangelist Billy Graham, has lashed out at President Barack Obama’s visit to a mosque, saying on Facebook that “the foundations of this nation have nothing to do with Islam.” They have “everything to do with the Church of Jesus Christ,” said Graham, head of both the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the Samaritan’s Purse global charity. “Islam cannot save anyone from hell or open the gates of heaven. “Only One can do that: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who paid the debt of sin for all mankind by giving His life as a sacrifice on Calvary’s cross — where he suffered and died for our sins, took our sins to the grave, and on the third day, God raised Him triumphantly to life.” President Obama visited the mosque, located outside Baltimore, in a deliberate rebuke to Republicans, whom White House aides say have stoked Islamophobia and bigotry following terror attacks inspired by the Islamic State around the world. But Graham said that Jesus Christ is “alive today. Muhammad is dead. “I worship a risen Lord,” he added. “Islam can’t compete with that.” ISLAM VERSUS CHRISTIANITY Islam is a religious system begun in the seventh century by Muhammad. Muslims follow the teachings of the Qur’an and strive to keep the Five Pillars. In the seventh century, Muhammad claimed the angel Gabriel visited him. During these angelic visitations, which continued for about 23 years until Muhammad’s death, the angel purportedly revealed to Muhammad the words of Allah (the Arabic word for “God” used by Muslims). These dictated revelations compose the Qur’an, Islam’s holy book. Islam means “submission,” deriving from a root word that means “peace.” The word Muslim means “one who submits to Allah.”
Muslims summarize their doctrine in six articles of faith:
Belief in one Allah: Muslims believe Allah is one, eternal, creator, and sovereign.
Belief in the angels
Belief in the prophets: The prophets include the biblical prophets but end with Muhammad as Allah’s final prophet.
Belief in the revelations of Allah: Muslims accept certain portions of the Bible, such as the Torah and the Gospels. They believe the Qur’an is the preexistent, perfect word of Allah.
Belief in the last day of judgment and the hereafter: Everyone will be resurrected for judgment into either paradise or hell.
Belief in predestination: Muslims believe Allah has decreed everything that will happen. Muslims testify to Allah’s sovereignty with their frequent phrase, inshallah, meaning, “if God wills.”
These five tenets compose the framework of obedience for Muslims:
The testimony of faith (shahada): “la ilaha illa allah. Muhammad rasul Allah.” This means, “There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” A person can convert to Islam by stating this creed. The shahada shows that a Muslim believes in Allah alone as deity and believes that Muhammad reveals Allah.
Prayer (salat): Five ritual prayers must be performed every day.
Giving (zakat): This almsgiving is a certain percentage given once a year.
Fasting (sawm): Muslims fast during Ramadan in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. They must not eat or drink from dawn until sunset.
Pilgrimage (hajj): If physically and financially possible, a Muslim must make the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia at least once. The hajj is performed in the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. A Muslim’s entrance into paradise hinges on obedience to these Five Pillars. Still, Allah may reject them. Even Muhammad was not sure whether Allah would admit him to paradise (Surah 46:9; Hadith 5.266). An Evaluation of Islam Compared to Christianity, Islam has some similarities but significant differences. Like Christianity, Islam is monotheistic. However, Muslims reject the Trinity—that God has revealed Himself as one in three Persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Muslims claim that Jesus was one of the most important prophets—not God’s Son. Islam asserts that Jesus, though born of a virgin, was created like Adam. Muslims do not believe Jesus died on the cross. They do not understand why Allah would allow His prophet Isa (the Islamic word for “Jesus”) to die a torturous death. Yet the Bible shows how the death of the perfect Son of God was essential to pay for the sins of believers (Isaiah 53:5-6; John 3:16; 14:6; 1 Peter 2:24). Islam teaches that the Qur’an is the final authority and the last revelation of Allah. The Bible, however, was completed in the first century with the Book of Revelation. The Bible warns against anyone adding to or subtracting from God’s Word (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Galatians 1:6-12; Revelation 22:18). The Qur’an, as a claimed addition to God’s Word, directly disobeys God’s command. Muslims believe that paradise can be earned through keeping the Five Pillars. The Bible, in contrast, reveals that sinful man can never measure up to the holy God (Romans 3:23; 6:23). Only by God’s grace may sinners be saved through repentant faith in Jesus (Acts 20:21; Ephesians 2:8-9). Because of these essential differences and contradictions, Islam and Christianity cannot both be true. The Bible and Qur’an cannot both be God’s Word. The truth has eternal consequences. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world” – 1 John 4:1-4
